- FX_SETUP PROGRAM
-
-
- FX_SETUP provides a convenient method to take
- advantage of features available on the EPSON FX80 and
- FX100 printers. These printers make it possible to
- print in a wide variety of styles. You may select from
- character fonts of several languages, change the number
- of characters per line, or change the number of lines
- per page, and even define character fonts of your own.
- The block graphics characters of the IBM printer and
- the special characters used by the IBM CRT's are built
- into the program. A duplicate of of each of these two
- sets are available in separate disk files for you to
- redefine if desired. P. FX_SETUP requires at least one
- disk, a PC with at 64k or more of memory, and PC-DOS
- 2.0.
-
- USING FX_SETUP
-
- When FX_SETUP is started, a screen regarding
- copywrite information followed by a screen of general
- information about the program is displayed. You may
- then select one of two modes or exit the program. This
- choice is made by using the up/down arrow keys to make
- the mode appear in reverse video. Once the proper
- choice is selected, it may be invoked by using the
- return key. The two operating modes are:
-
- 1. SET UP PRINTER
- 2. EDIT USER DEFINED CHARACTER FONT
-
- SET UP PRINTER
-
- If the mode is selected to set up the printer, the
- various print modes are chosen by using the function
- keys. Each time a particular function key is struck,
- the next option for that function is displayed in the
- reverse video field. When all the functions show the
- desired print modes, the printer may be set up by
- pressing the return key. You may notice that the
- printer is initialized when the set up mode is entered.
- This cancels any set up that had been performed pre-
- viously. A few programs on the market also initialize
- the printer. Likewise, this will cancel any printer set
- up that you've done with this program.
-
- F1 PRINT STYLE
-
- There are three choices for print style. The stand-
- ard choice is PICA or 10 char/inch. The other choices
- are ELITE (12 char/inch) and proportional. If you use
- proportional with a word processor, don't expect the
- text to be right justifed. Also, proportional overrides
- the selections made in F2 thru F5.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- F2 DOUBLE STRIKE
-
- The choices for double strike are yes and no. The
- double strike is useful for printing when your ribbon
- begins to wear.
-
- F3 EMPHASIZED
-
- The choices for emphasized are yes and no. In
- emphasized mode, the dots are printed twice but offset
- slightly. This makes the characters appear to be more
- fully formed. The term "correspondence quality" print
- is used in the industry to describe this type of print.
-
- F4 ENLARGED
-
- The choices for enlarged are yes and no. Enlarged
- prints each dot twice at normal spacing. Thus, each
- character is twice normal width.
-
- F5 CONDENSED
-
- The choices for condensed are yes and no. Condensed
- mode squeezes the character to about 16/inch if the
- print type is PICA. It is possible to have all or any
- of functions F2 thru F5 set to yes and F1 set to PICA
- or ELITE. This gives 32 different print styles.
-
- F6 CHARACTER SET
-
- This choice allows one of nine language fonts, two
- special character fonts, or nine user defined character
- fonts to be loaded into the FX's RAM. To download one
- of these sets, dip switch 1-4 in the printer must be
- set to off.
-
- A description of the language fonts may be found in
- the EPSON FX Operation Manual. A description of the two
- special character sets may be found in the IBM Techni-
- cal Reference. A copy of the later two sets are
- provided so that you may edit them.
-
- F7 EXTENDED SET
-
- Normally the characters with the codes of 0 thru 31
- and 128 thru 159 are not printable. If you wnat to
- print codes 128 thru 159, select "above 127 only". If
- you also want to print codes 0 thru 31, select "all
- codes". Even in the "all codes mode" some characters
- are not printable. These codes are normally used for
- printer control (i.e. carriage return, line feed,
- etc.).
-
- F8 SKIP PERF
-
- The choices for skip perf are yes and no. Although
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- the printer has the option to select the number of
- lines to skip, this program gives you only one choice.
- If a program is counting lines for form feed, selecting
- skip perf could confuse the program.
-
- F9 SUPERSCRIPT
-
- The choices for superscript are yes and no. This
- causes the print to be half height and above the line.
- It takes two passes to print the line is this mode.
-
- F10 LINES/INCH
-
- The printer gives a wide range of lines/inch to
- choose. This program has implemented 10 of those
- choices. The most common are 6 and 8.
-
- EDIT CHARACTER SET
-
- This mode is used for editing a character set that
- may be later downloaded to the printer. The program
- assumes one of nine files (USRFONT1.FXS, USRFONT2.FXS,
- ...,USRFONT9.FXS) on the default drive. If more than
- nine sets are desired, rename or copy one of these
- files. The program will ask you to select one of these
- files. If the file does not exist, it will be created
- with all the characters set to zero (not defined). The
- set up mode of the program only downloads characters
- that have been defined.
-
- After the file has been selected, you are asked to
- select the characters to be edited. this number may be
- changed by using the up/down arrow key to change the
- code by one or PgUp/PgDn to change the code by 16. To
- edit the selected character press the return key. To
- exit the edit mode, press the End key.
-
- The program will read the selected character
- definition from the file. If the character has been
- defined, it will be displayed on the screen in the
- block that is used to edit the character. The cursor
- may be moved in the block with the arrow keys. Bits may
- be turned on with the Ins key and turned off with the
- Del key. All bits may be turned off with the Esc key.
- To update the file with the new definition, press the
- return key. To delete the character definition from the
- file, press the Ctrl and End keys at the same time. To
- select a new character to edit without changing the
- definition of the current character, press the End key.
